How does the Presidio honor the past and look to the future?
PRESIDIO GATEWAY COMPETITION
For the Presidio Gateway competition, SITELAB was selected to develop the urban design and programming plan for the new Presidio Parklands for a design team led by West 8.
Working closely with the landscape architect, artist Wendy MacNaughton, and others, the team created a place of programmed activities both to honor the Presidio’s legacy as a military post for three nations and to engage in the present and future communities.
Location / Date:
San Francisco, CA / 2014
Status:
Completed
Site area:
13 acres
Client:
The Presidio Trust, The National Park Service, The Golden Gate Park Conservancy
Design Collaborators:
West 8, Jensen Architects, Bionic Landscape Architects, Wendy MacNaughton
The team proposed programs that engage with the concept of service and stewardship and span from tools to teach military history to an outdoor ecology lab for youth camps. The proposal was a simple but bold gestural move: an oval lawn circumscribed by an accessible ramp connecting the two divided pieces of the Presidio that would improve connectivity, establish an identity, build community, and restore ecology within a flexible framework.
This new Gateway for the Presidio inscribes a place that welcomes and engages, honors and educates, and orients and complements the inherent drama of Crissy Field, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, the City beyond, and the Presidio itself.
